Portland, OR
To capture the intricate patterns of Portland's bustling neighborhoods, I began with a simple outline based on a 2022 satellite image. Throughout the painting process, I let the colors mingle directly on the canvas, creating a dynamic interplay that reflects the city's lively urban tapestry. With thick, textured daubs of forest green and silvery blue, I aimed to bring out the lushness and drama of the cityscape. The diagonal pattern of the Ladd’s Addition neighborhood is not that visible from the satellite image, so I wanted my rendition of it to be extra exaggerated and charming. Also not visible are the individual roses of the International Rose Test Garden, but, nevertheless I added little pink and red dots as a nod to the “City of Roses.”
