New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orlean’s best-known holiday, Mardi Gras, has been celebrated for 325 years (as of 2024). This iconic event is nearly synonymous with the city itself, and I wanted to channel it in terms of color palette, spirit, and energy. Lake Ponchartrain is massive, and I was inspired by the satellite image to make it shockingly purple—which acts as a starting point for the rainbow-like maze of city streets and blocks. It’s giving... excessive, loud, and proud.
What looks like a trumpet above the title of the piece was purely an ironic coincidence. As Bob Ross would call it—a “happy accident.”
