Summer 2024 Recap: San Juan Island + Wedding

Summer 2024 Recap: San Juan Island + Wedding

I was commissioned to paint this painting as a wedding gift for a couple who are long-time family friends. The piece highlights a portion of San Juan Island, where their wedding venue was located. I started this large painting by selecting an attractive composition, and I chose to focus in on just the west side of San Juan Island, where the bride also grew up.

About 1/4 done with much of the underpainting shown.

Almost done...

This is the first painting I've done that included the addition of the couple's wedding date. I'm so happy their day literally turned out perfect!

Another first, and special touch, is a round gold metal embellishment, added to pinpoint the exact location of their wedding. I love this little "easter egg" surprise.

After the painting was complete and dry, I was able to physically take it with me to the wedding for the big reveal in San Juan Island. It was quite the trek to get out there via long car ride and big ferry adventure to Friday Harbor!

Over four days, we explored the island—ate fresh local oysters, kayaked through the inlets (some of which are in the painting), walked around Roche Harbor, drove through the area, and saw artwork by local artists!

We stayed in a really cool house that was right on the water, close to Snug Harbor Resort.

Revealing the painting to the bride and groom at their wedding was such a rewarding experience—they were genuinely stunned and really touched by it. It was clear they loved the piece, which made me so happy. It was a beautiful day, and I’m glad they now have a special piece to remember it by—something meaningful that will look great in their home for years to come. Success!
