I've been wanting to paint Crater Lake for awhile now and was probably the most excited about the resulting symmetrical composition of this piece, which centers the circular lake on a square canvas. I was also really excited about the pink and red hues in the earth surrounding the lake. I've visited Crater Lake only once and can confirm the water is very deep blue, and as it's known for being the deepest lake in the country, I really wanted to highlight that aspect. As a final touch I covered the water with a gloss varnish, and the land with a matte for some extra contrast.
